What goes into a steel stud wall

Every framed wall is a system of parts that work together. Select a part, or tap a marker on the drawing, to see what it does.

Elevation of a cold-formed steel stud wall A steel stud wall between floor and top tracks, with service punch-outs, a framed door opening with a header, a framed soffit at the ceiling, and drywall starting on one end.
Top and bottom track
  • U-shaped steel track anchors the wall to the floor and to the structure above. Studs sit inside it, so every wall starts straight, level, and square.

  • Galvanized C-shaped studs set at regular spacing carry the wall. Every stud comes straight and uniform, and it won't warp, twist, rot, or attract pests like lumber can.

  • Holes pre-punched through each stud line up down the wall, so electrical wiring and plumbing can run through without cutting into the framing.

  • Openings are framed with doubled jambs and a header that carries the load over the door, with short cripple studs filling in above.

    Commercial windows and doors
  • Framed drops at the ceiling hide ductwork and conduit, define spaces, and create clean transitions between ceiling heights.

    Acoustic ceilings
  • Consistent, dimensionally stable framing gives drywall a flat, true surface to fasten to, so finished walls look smooth and stay that way.

Why builders choose metal over wood

Metal framing has become the foundation of modern construction, from small additions to large commercial complexes.

  • Strength and durability

Steel studs hold their shape and strength for the life of the building.

  • Fire resistant

Steel doesn't burn, which adds a layer of protection to your walls.

  • No pests or rot

Termites and moisture that damage wood framing don't affect steel.

  • Consistent and stable

Every stud is straight and uniform, so walls stay true without warping or twisting.

  • Lightweight yet strong

Steel framing is easy to handle and move on site while still delivering a robust structure.

  • Faster installation

Uniform components go up quickly, which helps keep your project on schedule.

  • Better energy efficiency

Metal framing contributes to improved energy efficiency in the finished building.

It's especially well suited to structures that need high strength, durability, and fire resistance. We'll assess your project and recommend the best framing solution.
